Top MLB insider links Blue Jays to several big-name free agents

The Toronto Blue Jays are big-game hunting.Top MLB insider Jeff Passan dropped a mega offseason preview today on ESPN, and as they have been for several offseasons in a row, the Blue Jays were one of the teams most frequently mentioned as the suitors for big-name free agents. The biggest headline in the story was the fact Toronto was the first of at least seven interested teams to have an in-person meeting with Juan Soto.Soto is expected to land one of the biggest MLB free agent contracts in history, in a move that would be transformational for a Toronto lineup that already boasts the likes of Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.But Passan also had a few more nuggets of info to drop, and offered some insight into what Toronto’s plans could be with or without Soto.Toronto was also mentioned as possible suitors for a pair of star pitchers: Corbin Burnes, coming off a 15-9, 2.92 ERA season with the Baltimore Orioles, and Max Fried, who went 11-10 with a 3.25 ERA for the Atlanta Braves.Passan also confirmed Toronto’s interest in Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman, while adding the possibility of a reunion between the Blue Jays and popular pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, who was traded to the Astros earlier this year.It appears that whoever they end up in talks with, Toronto’s ownership group headed up by Edward Rogers seems willing to spend big on the right free agents this summer.“I think the Blue Jays are in a new state of being with Edward [Rogers], being where he is [and] his commitment to sports in total,” Soto’s agent Scott Boras said last week. “I think as a businessman, for his operation and communications, he’s a behemoth in sport. There really are few in sport that are [comparable]; I’ve been saying this about Toronto for years.”Of course, being mentioned means little if the Jays come up second in another offseason. Only time will tell if Toronto will be able to significantly upgrade this offseason, after finishing fifth in the American League East last year.
