Top 25 College Football Team Blows Late 9-Point Lead in Major Upset

During Week 10 of the college football season in the Big 12, it appears that the safest place to be for a team contending for the conference title was on the couch. Moments after the No. 11 Iowa State Cyclones lost to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the No.

17 Kansas State Wildcats found themselves on the wrong end of an upset by the Houston Cougars. The Wildcats led by as many as nine points in the second half, but the Cougars scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to secure the 24-19 win. The victory for Houston was quite a surprise for those around the country, including the oddsmakers.



Coming into Saturday's Big 12 battle, the Cougars were 9.5-point underdogs, but were able to overcome being outgained by nearly 100 yards on offense and converting on just 3-of-12 third downs. Thomas B.

Shea-Imagn Images The Houston comeback was sparked by a brutal interception by Kansas State's Avery Johnson at their own 12-yard line. The Cougars were able to power it into the end zone just three plays later to make it 19-17. The Wildcats then went stagnant on offense, punting on their next two drives before Houston quarterback Zeon Chriss broke off a monster 41-yard touchdown run to take a 24-19 lead.

With 2:31 remaining in the game, Kansas State had a chance to retake the lead, but Johnson was again picked off. The Wildcats also got the ball back with 35 seconds, but could not pull off the miracle comeback. The loss hands Kansas State (7-2) its second in Big 12 play, dropping them to fourth in the standings.
