Turkey Day Football. As we gather with family and friends during Thanksgiving week it is clear we have much to be thankful for. However, most also have challenges in their daily lives whether it be at work or in our personal lives.

When you are in a difficult spot, sports are a great way to insulate yourself from your difficulties. When you find yourself in an uncomfortable conversation with an uncle or sibling during Thanksgiving dinner you can always step away to check the score on the NFL game. I’m old enough to remember when the Lions couldn’t beat anybody on this holiday tradition.

However, football fans could not avoid watching the great Barry Sanders in the 90’s dazzle the television with his once-in-a-lifetime running style. In the 1997 game, Sanders ran for 167 yards with three TD’s that included 40, 25, and 15 yard runs. Detroit has played a Turkey Day game 84 times since 1945.

Since the Lions began playing on Thanksgiving they are 37 – 45 – 2. The Lions are 6 – 18 this century. Their worst losing streak was the nine-game skid between 2004 – 2012.

Regarding this Turkey Day, the Lions are currently a 10 – 1 NFL best and will put a pounding on the Bears to end their winless streak since 2016. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. Please enable it in your browser settings.
