Tom Fletcher taken to hospital after looking like he’d been ‘smashed in the face’

If left untreated, the condition can lead to blindness.

The McFly singer, 39, suffers from the rare eye condition, which if left untreated can lead to vision loss and blindness. Taking to Instagram, Tom took a selfie of the flare up and explained how hewill have to take six weeks of eye drops.

Showing his asymmetrical face with one eye squinted and downcast, the Strictly star said: ‘My autoimmune thing flared up out of nowhere last night.‘Woke up feeling (and looking) like I’d been smashed in the face! ‘This is after it had calmed down and I could see again!’ The McFly star has suffered flare ups in the past (Picture: Neil Mockford/GC Images)Also commenting ‘uveitis sucks’, Tom said this was not the day he had planned. This isn’t the first time Tom has been rushed to hospital with the eye condition.



In December 2022 Tom revealed he was going to be staying in ‘dark rooms’ with sunglasses on while taking 6 weeks of steroids after a flare up, as he finished off the post with: ‘Merry Christmas.’What is uveitis? Uveitis, also known as iritis, is a rare condition that causes inflammation inside part of your eye.Early treatment is important to prevent long-term complications including blindness.

Symptoms of uveitis can include:eye pain, which may feel worse when you’re readingred or watery eyesreduced or blurred visionsensitivity to lightlights in the corner of your eyes or dark spots (flashes and floaters)You may get some or all of these symptoms.Symptoms can develop quickly, in hours and days, or more gradually over weeks and months. Sometimes uveitis does not cause any symptoms.

Four months later, it struck again in April 2023, and Tom had another six weeks of eye drop treatment as he revealed to fans this was just the third flare up he’d ever had.Tom is married to actor and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, who he shares three children with – Buzz, 11, Buddy, nine, and Max, seven. The Obviously hitmaker’s health news comes after he bubbled with pride over Buzz’s foray into showbusiness.
