Toddler drowns in homestay pool in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: A 2-year-old boy was found drowned in a swimming pool area at a homestay in Teluk Kumbar, Penang, on Wednesday night.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 2-year-old boy was found drowned in a swimming pool area at a homestay in Teluk Kumbar, Penang, on Wednesday night.The child was found by his 46-year-old father after he was alerted by a friend that the boy was missing from their room.The man and three of his children had gone to the homestay to visit the friend who was visiting from Kuala Lumpur.

His wife, who works as a factory operator at a factory in Bayan Lepas, was not present during the trip.Southwest district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said the father's friend had noticed the boy missing about 10.15pm.



He said the two men began searching the homestay premises and shortly after found the child floating in the swimming pool.The friend called the Balik Pulau Hospital and an ambulance arrived to bring the boy to the hospital, he added."At 11.

40pm, a medical officer at Balik Pulau Hospital confirmed that the child had passed away," said Sazalee.A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Balik Pulau Hospital forensic unit at 10am today, confirming the cause of death as drowning.The case has been classified under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect.

Anyone found guilty of the offence is liable to a prison term of up to 10 years, a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
