TN cops write to X for action against bogus investment posts

Chennai: Cybercrime wing of Tamil Nadu police has issued a notice to X, calling upon the social media platform to take action against fraudulent posts circulating on its website. These posts, often using sensational headlines and forged logos of popular news outlets, falsely promote investment websites and were identified as part of a larger scheme to deceive users. Police also urged the public to remain cautious and not fall victim to these deceptive online schemes.

In an official statement on Saturday, police confirmed that a letter was also sent to the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) at the Union ministry of home affairs, requesting them to direct X to implement better moderation and verification processes to detect and remove suspicious content. The goal is to ensure the platform is not used for manipulating users with fraudulent investment opportunities. The cybercrime wing has taken down several fraudulent social media accounts and websites involved in the promotion of these schemes.



The team noted a rise in posts claiming endorsements from popular public figures such as Shreya Ghoshal and Sudha Moorthi, among others, which posed significant risks to unsuspecting users. So far, police have identified 25 X handles and posts containing false information and misuse of Shreya Ghoshal's name. All these handles were suspended.

As many as 38 related websites and trading platforms were also blocked. The police have also identified 18 suspicious Facebook posts and 15 associated fraudulent websites..
