Timex has long been a popular choice when it comes to the affordable watch game. In June, the American icon hooked-up with NYC-based menswear brand Noah NY to drop some sub-£200 Cartier Tank -like goodness. And guess what? They sold out super fast, and are now going for super inflated prices on the secondary market.

It shows finding your watch grail isn't just about keeping an eye out for once in a blue moon releases from a few Swiss big dogs . There was no waitlist as long as your arm to get one, and they looked really, really good. Clearly buoyed by the success of the Noah piece, now Timex has decided to take affordable watches to the next level – by dropping timepieces for a quid.

Yes, £1. You haven't read that wrong. The US-based watch manufacturer is turning the clock back on its pricing and releasing a limited-edition Waterbury for a pound as part of its 170th anniversary celebrations.

The watch’s roots go all the way back to 1854 when Timex went by the Waterbury Clock Company. As part of its efforts to democratise timekeeping, it released the Yankee pocket watch, which sold for $1. In a statement, Shari Fabiani, Chief Marketing officer of Timex Group described the move as a “heartfelt reaffirmation of our unwavering commitment to making quality timepieces accessible to everyone.

The £1 Anniversary Watch pays homage to the original Waterbury campaign, which promised ‘correct time for little money.’” And that’s exactly what this watch does on the tin. Timex is a leader in the accessible watch sphere, and has consistently revived hard-wearing icons from the past, such as the Waterbury.

Thanks to its reputation of consistently sick timepieces, it garnered mass appeal from big-time watch guy Will Ferrell , who wore a Japan-only collab between Timex and Swedish fishing supply company Abu Garcia with a tux in January this year. So why does a guy who’s worn Rollies and a Zenith El Primero go for a Timex? You can wear them pretty much anywhere, they’re super durable, and more often than not, they ain’t too visually dissimilar to high-end Swiss models. Joining Ferrell in the affordable watch camp are Tyler, the Creator , who throws on the occasional Casio when he’s not crushing on rare Cartiers ; Mark Wahlberg , who’s flown the flag for Timex since the ‘90s; and Ed Sheeran , who’s the proud owner of his own G-Shock collab .

So if you want to buy into some affordable watch history, then nabbing a Timex Waterbury for £1 is a good place to start. The 170th Anniversary limited-edition watch will drop on 16th November on the Timex web store and at Frasers in Meadowhall for £1..
