AN expert has warned that it's "time to find the big coat again" as temperatures look set to plummet as low as 4C in just days. It looks like summer is well and truly over as frost is also set to move in later in the week. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) , Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather shared the bleak outlook.

He said: "Windchill forecast for Wednesday and Thursday morning shows how it will be time to find the big coat again." It comes as Met Eireann predict Wednesday and Thursday are set to be the worst days of the upcoming "noticeably cooler" switch. Today, temperatures will remain in the teens with highs of 14C to 19C with increasing cloud.

Patchy rain or drizzle will spread across northern counties before turning "heavier" tonight, particularly across Ulster. Tonight will also be blustery with lows of 8C to 12C. Rain from tonight will carry across into Tuesday morning before clearing to some sunny spells.

Met Eireann said: "Tomorrow, outbreaks of rain will effect many areas early on but the rain will soon clear southwards. "And while nice sunny spells will follow, a few scattered showers will also feed down in the flow, most of those showers affecting north and northwest areas. Bit cool tomorrow with highs of 13C to 16C.

" Tomorrow night will remain cool with showers as lowest temperatures sit between 6C to 9C. On Wednesday, the weather takes a turn for the worst as temperatures turn "noticeably cooler". Weather bosses have also warned that hail and lighting looks set to hit Ireland come Wednesday too.

Met Eireann warned: "Wednesday, noticeably cool and breezy with sunshine and scattered heavy showers. "Those showers will be most frequent for northern areas with a chance of hail and lightning in these parts." The weather chiefs have warned it will be noticeably "chilly" as highest temperatures sit between just 11C to 14C.

Temperatures on Wednesday night will plummet as low as 4C to 6C as rain continues - but the wet weather will remain confined to north and northwest counties. Low temperatures and poor weather look set to continue into Thursday. Temperatures will remain the same with highs of just 11C to 14C.

Met Eireann said: "Leading into another cool day with sunshine and scattered showers, but overall drier particularly for the western half of Ireland. "But it will be cold and clear during the nighttime hours with potentially some grass frost setting in." As the weekend begins to move in the forecast is promised to improve slightly after a "chilly" start to Friday.

While there will be some sunshine, cloud looks set to increase across the country as the day goes on. This will bring with it some rain and drizzle as highest temperatures sit between 11C to 16C..
