Union Square is about to serve up another culinary experience with Time Out Market's announcement of a new food hall, slated to open its doors this fall. Occupying the ground floor of the tech-centric Zero Irving building at 124 East 14th Street, the 10,000-square-foot market is set to feature seven kitchens, a bar, and a stage area for live performances. In a report by Eater New York, the food hall will also include a 70-seat outdoor terrace and will be the eleventh Time Out Market globally, following the brand's expansion plan that includes seven more locations by 2027.

The new venture is emerging in a location that formerly hosted Urbanspace Union Square. This food hall, however, shut its doors recently, joining the likes of Gotham West Market and Canal Street Market in New York's ever-shifting food hall scene. The announcement by Time Out comes amidst this shifting terrain, aspiring to provide a communal space that blends food with cultural and artistic expression.

“Time Out Market New York, Union Square will not just be a place to eat: it will be a platform for culinary and cultural talents—where you can discover the city’s flavors and fresh ideas, and experience New York’s creativity all at once; a place for people and the local community to come together,” Virginia Rector-Birbal, vice president for U.S. Time Out Market, told 6sqft.

Built on the former site of the P.C. Richard & Son building, Zero Irving opened in 2022 amidst controversy with local preservationists over rezoning concerns.

Developed by RAL Cos. and JRE Partners, this modern tower is positioned as a hub for technology learning and coworking spaces. Originally, Urbanspace had taken the ground floor space to set up a technology training center, but the food hall operator is expected to leave by month's end, for reasons not disclosed.

Rental costs in the space were reported by Crain's New York to start at $120 per square foot in 2022, but current figures for Time Out's lease remain unreported, as detailed by 6sqft.While some food halls in the city are closing or undergoing transformations, others like the pan-Asian concept in Long Island City and Golden Mall's Financial District debut are continuing to press ahead. The demand for diverse culinary experiences remains a prominent feature of the New York City food scene.
