In an old conversation with Arbaaz Khan on 'The Invincibles Series' season 2, renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai shared his candid views about some of Bollywood’s well-known actors, including Jackie Shroff and Shatrughan Sinha . The filmmaker, who has worked with many major stars over his career, did not hold back while discussing the acting abilities and personalities of these famous names. During the interview, Arbaaz asked Ghai about his thoughts on a few Bollywood stars, to which Ghai replied that there are five types of actors: non-actors, bad actors, and others.
He specifically mentioned Jackie Shroff as a "bad actor" and Anil Kapoor as simply an "actor." Ghai had worked with both Jackie and Anil in his 1989 film *Ram Lakhan* and other projects. While he was critical of Jackie’s acting, he did not elaborate further on what led him to this conclusion.
When it came to Shatrughan Sinha, Subhash Ghai called him "overconfident." He recalled how Shatrughan, despite being talented, often had issues with punctuality. Ghai mentioned that the veteran actor was never on time for shoots, which caused difficulties during filming.
The two collaborated on several films in the 1970s, including 'Kalicharan' and 'Vishwanath', both of which were successful at the box office. The filmmaker also talked about his experience working with Shah Rukh Khan in their 1997 hit 'Pardes'. He admitted that he and Shah Rukh often had disagreements on set, describing their relationship as one of frequent "tu-tu main-main" (friendly arguments).
Ghai added that after his film 'Karz' (1980), he decided to avoid working with the newer generation of stars, believing that it would help him make more genuine films. Apart from these revelations, Ghai spoke about being called the "showman" of Indian cinema, a title he isn’t particularly fond of. Despite his reservations about the label, Ghai’s impressive body of work has earned him a special place in Bollywood.
His list of notable films includes 'Hero' (1983), ' Karma ' (1986), 'Saudagar' (1991), 'Khalnayak' (1993), 'Pardes' (1997), and 'Taal' (1999), among many others. While Ghai’s comments have sparked some debate among fans and the industry, they offer a rare glimpse into his personal opinions about working with some of Bollywood's biggest stars. The filmmaker’s honest take on Jackie Shroff and Shatrughan Sinha, in particular, has caught the attention of many.
