The boxing community is mourning the loss of former three-time world champion Israel Vazquez, who has died at 46 after a battle with cancer. Vazquez, revered for his tenacity and skill inside the ring, retired in 2010 boasting an impressive 44-5 record. Notably remembered for his gripping four-fight saga against Rafael Marquez, Vazquez initially lost but came back to claim victory in two consecutive bouts before succumbing in the final encounter by a third-round knockout.
Vazquez held the IBF title from 2004 to 2005 and dominated as the WBC and The Ring champion from 2005 to 2008. He was renowned for his knockout power, with 32 of his 44 victories coming in this fashion. Fans worldwide admired him as a fierce competitor and true showman whenever he laced up his gloves.
Sadly diagnosed with stage four sarcoma, Vazquez's fight outside the ring ended too soon. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed his passing and honoured him on X, formerly known as Twitter: " Israel Vazquez is finally resting in peace. May God give strength and support to his wife, Laura, their children, family, and friends during these difficult times.
" Further expressing his condolences, Sulaiman added: "Thank you, Israel , for the many great memories you have given us through your actions inside the ring but most importantly outside of it. You are now eternal. Rest in peace, and everything will be all right.
" Vazquez made his professional debut in 1995 at the age of 17, notching up an impressive streak with nine consecutive victories before experiencing his first career defeat in his tenth fight. A mere nine years later, he secured his first major world title after triumphing over Jose Luis Valbuena. Last month, Vazquez's wife Laura revealed to the Los Angeles Times the harrowing details of her husband's debilitating illness: "He can hardly speak and, when he does, he is short of breath.
He is very weak." She courageously continued, "We were told he would have six months to live, but I'm not going to give up. We're going to get a second opinion.
We know there's still hope." The boxing world has been united in mourning following the devastating news, with Freddie Roach, the legendary trainer, paying homage: "Forever a world champion and legend in boxing. One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with – a world champion.
Israel , my friend, may you rest in peace now. My condolences to the Vazquez family and to all those who called Israel their friend." Australian boxing sensation Billy Dib also expressed his sorrow: "Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Israel Vázquez after his courageous battle with cancer.
He was not only a champion but also a true warrior in and out of the ring. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who admired him. May he rest in peace.
" boxuGeorge Kambosos Jr swiftly took to social media to honour Vazquez, writing: "RIP legend," and adding, "Was an honour to have met you, absolute warrior of the game. My condolences to his family and friends.".
