Surat: Three people, including a man and his son, drowned in the Narmada River in Shuklatirth of Bharuch district on Friday. Shuklatirth hosts the Kartik Poornima fair every year, where a large number of people take a holy dip in the river. Those who died were Vasant Mistry, his son Binit, and another nine-year-old boy, Dishat Mistry.
The Mistry family from the Vejalpur area of Bharuch went to perform rituals for a deceased family member. As part of the ritual, the family members entered the river for 'Pind Daan' and flower offerings. According to locals, they drowned in the deep pits that formed due to illegal mining in the river.
Police have lodged a case of accidental death..
