Three Baton Rouge competitors post top qualifying marks. Bears, Redstickers fared well

Three local competitors swam top preliminary times, while reigning champions St. Joseph’s Academy and Catholic High began their quests for podium finishes in Division I at the LHSAA state swim meet on Friday in Sulphur.

Amant’s Ava Ostendorf also recorded a top time during prelims held at the SPAR Aquatic Center. The four-day LHSAA meet concludes Saturday with finals for Division II at 9 a.m.

Joseph’s used depth to qualify well across the board for Saturday's finals. Each team qualified a maximum of four qualifiers in top-16 scoring slots in four different events. Ostendorf, a senior, had one of the most dramatic time drops.

She placed first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 21.05 seconds, nearly 30 seconds better than her qualifying mark. Roper had the top qualifying mark of 1:53.

99 seconds in the meet’s first individual event, the 200 freestyle. She also had the second-best qualifying mark of 58.33 seconds in the 100 backstroke.

Catholic’s Vargas had the top mark of 58.39 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. The Bears also posted the top times in two of their three relays.
