It was a newsy week for India. The Centre has taken a step closer to making ‘One Nation, One Election’ a reality, which will see the country holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections in the future. India could boost its defence power soon as it eyes Russia’s advanced Voronezh long-range radar system.

This would give a fillip to the nation’s missile detection and air defence capabilities. The suicide of a Bengaluru-based techie due to alleged harassment from his wife and her family has gripped India. The tragic incident has brought the country’s marital laws to the limelight.

Here’s all this and more in our weekly wrap from India. 1 . At a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved two bills to implement the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal.

While one bill proposes synchronising the tenures of the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections, the other calls for similar amendments for Delhi and other Union Territory Assemblies. The BJP has long supported the idea of one nation, one poll, but the opposition has raised questions about its feasibility.
