Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan rejected a big-budget movie during the late 90s. It was going to be India's most expensive project. However, it never came to life.

During the 90s, we would have witnessed one of the most expensive movies to be made in India. The story was first offered to Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan. After Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan rejected it, Kamal Haasan was cast in the lead role.

It also featured Nasar, Vishnuvardhan and Satyaraj. The movie we are talking about is Marudhanayagam. It was supposed to be made in 1997 and was based on a true saga.

The movie was based on the freedom fighter Marudhanayagam Pillain from the 18th century. At that time, the budget of the film was estimated to be around Rs 85 crore. The makers also had plans to cast Kate Winslet.

However, the Titanic star rejected the film. It was supposed to be the first joint production between Indian, French and British companies. But the project didn't happen.

The reason the Marudhanayagam movie never came to life was because a British production pulled out. The reason they decided to call off the collaboration was because of India's 1998 nuclear tests. If the movie was made, it would have been a bigger hit than Baahubali 2.

It would be interesting to see if a movie of such a grand level will truly happen some day or not..
