Wherever the duo collaborated, they often nailed in films.
Sunny and Rajkumar broke multiple records together in the film industry and raised the bars of Bollywood. They even worked together in films like Ghayal (1990) and Damini (1993), once again the duo reunited together in a film that took almost five years to make and had multiple complications. The film we are talking about is Sunny Deol’s Ghatak.
For a brief moment, news reports claimed that Ghatak was to get shelved due to multiple factors. However, all these rumours were put to an end after Ghatak was released in 1996 for which Sunny Deol and veteran actor Amirsh Puri were given awards. Now talking about why Ghatak took five long years to get released.
Film director, Rajkumar Santoshi was busy shooting Andaz Apna Apna and Barsaat, which delayed Ghatak’s making. On the other hand, Raveena Tandon was the preferred choice to pair up with Sunny Deol however, things didn’t go as usual. Shortly after 10 days, Raveena Tandon left the sets of Ghatak due to personal reasons, and later actress Meenakshi Sheshadri was asked to step in.
Surprisingly, it was Meenakshi’s last film. Many may not know that even Sunny Deol was not the first choice for Ghatak. Instead, it was South star Kamal Haasan.
It was the perfect opportunity for Kamal to return to the limelight in Bollywood after Dekha Pyaar Tumhara (1985). Even, posters were already made claiming the return of Kamal Haasan in Bollywood. When was already confirmed for and the advertisement appeared in Screen read as Welcome back to Hindi Screen .
He even shot for few scenes but Kamal Haasan withdrew from the film for unknown reason. REST IS HISTORY 🔥🔥🔥 — Kashinath 2.0 (@TheDeolsFC) However, no producer was ready to back Kamal Haasan in Ghatak.
According to an IMDb report, producers pitched Sunny Deol’s name for Ghatak since he appeared in Ghayal and Damini. Later on Sunny Deol got the offer for the film. Despite such complications, Sunny Deol’s Ghatak was released during Diwali in 1996.
The film had a neck-to-neck fight with Aamir Khan’s Raja Hindustani. The film went on to become the second highest-grossing film of the year, after Aamir Khan’s film. The film was made with a small budget of Rs 6 crore and the film made a business of Rs 32 crore.
