Shows like Critical Role, The Adventure Zone and Dimension 20 help people understand the joy of creating stories with friends around the table. They are one of the reasons why D&D is more popular than it’s ever been. Many of these shows have started to explore role playing games beyond fantasy worlds full of spells and swords.

Dimension 20 recently completed a season of Never Stop Blowing Up on Dropout. This story takes place in a world of epic fantasy inspired by something other than thick novel series; 80’s action cinema. “I knew that these players would be excited to tackle something in the action comedy genre,” said Brennan Lee Mulligan.

“A lot of the system was finding something that could find the comedic style of the cast that we knew we were going to have and could support the genre that we knew we were going to be telling the story in.” The type of story told in this season is often known as isekai to fans of Asian media. The story centers around character drawn into a new world from their own, often from the normal, mundane world into a realm of fantasy and adventure.

Examples include the Jumanji film series, the comic book DIE and the classic Dungeons & Dragons cartoon from the 80’s. With this not being a typical fantasy story, cast members went through different methods in figuring out what sort of character they would play. That included a process where they essentially made two characters to play; the persona they created inside the action movie world as well as the regular person whisked away by the magic videotape.

“Heightening where it’s allowed. This is a cool thing my friends are trying to do. How can I help them achieve that in this game? Leaning on the story that everyone’s trying to tell.

” The dual character setup gave Nwadiwe a chance to spin the story in an unusual direction when both of his characters, Wendell Morris and Vic Ethanol, entered into conversation with each other. That turned the story from a simple send-up of a genre to something deeper. It was entirely unplanned and is an excellent example of the power of this style of storytelling.

“Everyone was a fish out of water trying to figure out how everything was going,” said Nwadiwe. “What’s a way I can do this that might switch things up and make it more interesting? You’re living vicariously through this character. What would they say about the choices you’re making?” “It was as beautiful a gift as you can get in the world of improv,” said Wysocki.

“It unlocked a thing for us. I am so lucky to be playing with people that are operating on this caliber.” “Nothing is pre-scripted,” said Mulligan.

“Nothing is telegraphed to the players ahead of the time. They are organically discovering this world and making choices as they move through it.” Now that Dimension 20 has started to tackle bigger concepts and different genres, cast members chimed in on what new stories the future might hold.

“I wouldn’t want to be a part of it,” said Roland. “because I’m not good at this but I really enjoy it. There have been some smatterings of conversation of a musical season.
