In the past, the success of any movie was measured by how long it ran in theatres. There were terms like silver or golden jubilees or how many people watched it. At present, movies are either called hits or flops on the basis of their box office numbers.

But there was one movie that ran for theatres for a long time, and it is Sholay. Sholay left behind Mughal-e-Azam's record and ran in cinema halls for 286 weeks. The Ramesh Sippy directorial was released on August 15, 1975 and it is all set to turn 50 years old.

The action drama stars Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bachchan, and Amjad Khan. The story was penned by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Sholay was made on a budget of Rs 3 crore and it sold over 25 crore tickets.

The numbers are bigger than movies like RRR or Jawan. The Amitabh and Dharmendra starrer was played at Mumbai's Minerva theatre from 1975 to 1980. Back then, tickets were very cheap and ranged from Rs 1.

50 to Rs 3. These were also the rates of balcony seats. Sholay is remembered today for its action-packed sequences and iconic dialogues.

The music was also a big hit. Today, the Ramesh Sippy-directed film is considered one of the biggest classics in Hindi cinema. Whenever people talk about perfect portrayals of action heroes and a gangster, Sholay is always at the top of the list.
