It's such a simple and effective way to get the job done

Spring is finally here and it seems everyone is outside getting those much-needed jobs done in the garden. One of the most common chores that needs doing at this time of year is clearing away the weeds that have taken over people's paths and driveways over the long, damp winter. But with bottles or sachets of weed killing solution often running into double figures, it's not something a lot of people have the spare cash for, especially in the current climate.

Yet there is a cheap way to get rid of the green prickly stuff and it's very easy to do, using a 35p buy from the likes of Tesco or Aldi. If you've got a fair bit of ground to cover, then you'll probably need two bottles of white vinegar to get the job done. A bottle of white vinegar costs just 35p (Image: Manchester Family/MEN) With a drive full of weeds to tackle, I simply mixed the liquid with three large spoons of salt and three large spoons of washing-up liquid, both of which cost just pennies.

One woman who first shared the recipe online declared it 'the best weed killer ever' and I have to agree. Before and after the weed killer (Image: Manchester Family/MEN) I had a watering can rather than a spray bottle, so it wasn't the most efficient way to tackle the weeds, as a fair bit went on the area around them rather than tackling them direct - and left a fair bit of salt residue behind until it rained.

But within just a few hours of the stuff being trickled over them, they were visibly dead. Even my cynical husband was impressed. "That's better than the weed killer we used last time," he declared.

And a damn sight cheaper too. Surely being so savvy means it's his turn to pull out the dead ones. I think I've earned that.
