Two people were taken to hospital after a malfunction and subsequent crash of a 55m-high fairground ride in Birmingham city centre. The incident occurred on the Star Flyer, situated near the International Convention Centre, at approximately 7.30pm on Thursday, December 12.
Emergency services including West Midlands Police, Fire Service and Ambulance Service were all called to the scene where they discovered over a dozen people affected by the incident. A statement from West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that two ambulances, five paramedic officers among others were dispatched to the location. Upon arrival at Centenary Square, there were 13 patients needing attention.
While most were assessed on site, two individuals were taken to hospital. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service stated: "On arrival, crews found 13 patients." She added: "Two women, were treated by ambulance staff for injuries not believed to be serious and conveyed to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.
", reports Birmingham Live . "Nine women and three men were assessed by medics before being given self-care advice and discharged at the scene." In addition to paramedics, a MERIT trauma doctor, critical care paramedic, two Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS) emergency doctors and the Trust's Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were all sent to the scene.
West Midlands Fire Service previously confirmed that the ride "failed and crashed", resulting in a fall to ground-level. The ride was part of the Christmas festivities in the city centre. A cordon was established earlier this evening with the public advised to steer clear of the area.
