A bid to build almost 130 homes on the edge of a Leicestershire town has taken a step closer, with the developer submitting its planning application for the scheme. “Land promotion” company Richborough hopes to build the 126 homes next to a golf course in Market Bosworth . The scheme, on land north of Station Road, will include 50 affordable homes.

The applicant is also proposing children’s play spaces, and a number of green areas, including a “kitchen garden” and an orchard. The plan becomes the third for Market Bosworth in recent times, with two other major schemes totalling roughly 360 new homes waiting to be decided by on Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC). If all are approved, Market Bosworth could see its population swell by roughly a fifth.

A further 100 homes by Gladman Developments are also in the works for land off nearby Shenton Lane. Currently Market Bosworth has a population of just more than 2,000 people.

The development is earmarked for land next to the formerly disused Kyngs Golf and Country Club that is being revamped by Statue Homes. A new hotel, holiday lodges and club house have all been approved for the golf course over the last few years. A letter previously submitted to the council on behalf of Richborough argued that developments taking place at the club will "create built form" to the north of the site, which they said would make the land proposed for housing "more enclosed".

Richborough has held a public consultation over its plans, with 15 objections raised against the scheme. The developer said the "main objection" centred on the lack of need for the additional homes in the town. "However, there is evidence that further housing delivery is required in the borough, and we believe that a greater contribution of dwellings can be delivered in Market Bosworth than the 180 dwellings currently proposed through the draft local plan," it said.

Richborough, who said one consultee was neutral to their plans and another was in favour, said its proposed site was “an opportunity to create a new living environment of the highest standard”. It added the homes will be “an attractive, locally distinguishable and sustainable addition to Market Bosworth”. The application documents can be viewed on HBBC's planning portal, and comments and objections can be made until Saturday, December 28.
