Michelle Patidar was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 32 and decided to fight this disease. She did a total kitchen overhaul and made changes that were essential to replace the toxic products in her kitchen. She took to Instagram where she shared a reel explaining things she has removed from her kitchen that were earlier used daily.
“After I finished my cancer treatments, I did a total kitchen overhaul. But don’t get me wrong, I slowly made changes. As things ran out, I replaced them with non-toxic versions.
It took some time, but I feel so much more in control of my health knowing I eliminated harmful, toxic products from my kitchen!” her post read. Here’s what you will never find in her kitchen now: - Refined Oil One of the first things Patidar eliminated from her kitchen was refined oils, which are high in omega-6 fatty acids. These oils, such as vegetable oil, can promote inflammation in the body, a condition linked to cancer development.
Instead, she replaced them with healthier, more stable fats like extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, ghee, and grass-fed butter. These alternatives are rich in beneficial fats that help reduce inflammation and provide nutrients that support overall health. - Nonstick Cookware Nonstick cookware is convenient, but it often contains chemicals like PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which can release toxic fumes when overheated.
Studies suggest that long-term exposure to these chemicals can be harmful to health and might increase the risk of certain cancers. Patidar replaced her nonstick pans with stainless steel and cast iron cookware, both of which are much safer and more durable. Cast iron, in particular, can provide trace amounts of iron to the food, benefiting those with iron deficiencies.
- Aluminum Foil She also removed the aluminium foil from her kitchen, a common item used for baking and cooking. While convenient, aluminium foil can react with acidic foods, leading to the leaching of aluminium into your meals, a practice linked to various health risks, including cancer. She replaced it with non-bleached parchment paper, which is a safer and more natural option for cooking and baking.
- Plastic Containers And Sandwich Bags Plastic products, especially those made from BPA (bisphenol A), can leach harmful chemicals into food, potentially disrupting hormones and increasing cancer risk. To avoid this, Patidar switched to using glass containers for storage and paper sandwich bags instead of plastic. This simple swap helps avoid unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals found in plastics.
- Scented Candles Many scented candles contain synthetic fragrances that release harmful chemicals when burned, some of which have been linked to respiratory issues and increased cancer risks. Instead, Patidar now uses essential oils, which offer a natural and safe alternative for creating a pleasant ambience in her home. - Plastic Water Bottles Plastic water bottles often contain chemicals like BPA, which are known endocrine disruptors.
Patidar replaced plastic bottles with glass and stainless steel, safer options that do not leach harmful chemicals into beverages, ensuring cleaner and healthier drinking water. - Plastic Cutting Boards Patidar replaced her plastic cutting boards with wooden ones. Plastic boards can harbour bacteria and leach chemicals into food, while wood is naturally more resistant to bacteria and provides a safer surface for food preparation.
- Ultra Processed Foods Perhaps one of the most impactful changes, Patidar focused on eliminating ultra-processed foods from her diet. These foods are high in sugars, food dyes, preservatives, and unhealthy fats, all of which can increase inflammation and contribute to cancer risk. She now chooses whole foods, focusing on natural ingredients and snacks free from harmful additives.
- Toxic Kitchen Cleaning Supplies Traditional cleaning supplies often contain harsh chemicals that can be toxic when inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Patidar replaced these products with non-toxic cleaning supplies, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals in her home.
