New Delhi: Thieves allegedly made away with nearly Rs 1.7 crore in cash and jewellery from a businessman's house in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj on Thursday night. The family suspects the involvement of a newly hired help who has gone missing since the incident.

The businessman, 35-year-old Kapil Chouhan who was on a trip to Rajasthan with his wife, told police that a domestic help rang the doorbell on Friday morning, but no one answered. After trying for around half an hour, she contacted the businessman's wife. Chouhan then called the caretaker, who was inside the house and was later found to be drugged, managed to open the door.

It was found that the thieves entered the house in Vasant Kunj Enclave through another door, drugged the businessman's sister and the caretaker, and fled with the valuables. The new help who has gone missing was hired 10 days ago. Chouhan said that around 10am on Friday, the domestic help arrived as usual for work and rang the doorbell repeatedly, but nobody opened the door.

Concerned, she called Chouhan's wife. Sensing something was wrong, she handed the phone to Chouhan. Chouhan immediately called their caretaker, who eventually answered the phone.

"His voice was slurred, and he sounded heavily intoxicated. Chouhan asked him to open the gate. When the help who was waiting outside finally entered the house, she found the kitchen door strangely ajar," police said.

The businessman's sister was found unconscious in a room upstairs and the new help was nowhere to be found. The caretaker staggered through the house and told Chouhan that all almirahs were broken into and the entire house was ransacked. The CCTV DVR was also removed.

A stool placed near the CCTV setup suggested it was deliberately taken out, the complainant said. Chouhan immediately called police, and a team of local police, crime branch, anti-terrorist squad and forensic experts reached the site. Medical examinations were conducted on both persons who were allegedly drugged.

"Both were drugged—likely administered through food or through inhalation of a substance," said an officer. Preliminary checks revealed that cash worth Rs 20-22 lakh and jewellery valued at Rs 1.25-Rs 1.

50 crore were missing. Chouhan later filed an official complaint, suspecting that the new help and her accomplices might have drugged his sister and the caretaker before committing the theft..
