The California DMV plans to open up 18 offices across the state an hour earlier than usual on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for the next several weeks. Starting Monday through June 25, the extra hour from 7 a.m.
to 8 a.m. will be reserved just for REAL ID appointments.
On May 7, the federal government will begin enforcing the REAL ID Act at airports for domestic flights and at secure federal facilities. This means that people must show a REAL ID or another federally approved document, like a passport, to get through security checkpoints. DMV Director Steve Gordon said that anyone who has a passport or a green card don’t need to get the replacement.
They can wait to do so until they normally need to get their identification renewed. “There’s no need to rush in today because you have a really valid credential,” he said. When examining your ID card, look for a bear with a star in the top right corner of your California driver's license or identification card.
How do you sign up for REAL ID? You can start the process online at REALID.dmv.ca.
gov and upload documents. But you still must go in-person to a DMV office in California and bring those documents to complete the application. The requirements include: Proof of identity Proof of California residency Note: If the name on your proof of identity is different than the name on the other documents, you'll also need to bring legal name change documents like a marriage certificate or adoption papers.
You can see the complete list of acceptable documents here . Why is REAL ID being required? It stems from a measure signed into law in 2005 at a time when tensions were still high following the Sept. 11 attacks.
The 9/11 Commission's REAL ID Act also prohibited federal agencies such as TSA from accepting state-issued driver's licenses or other ID cards that do not meet federal standards. Who is required to have a REAL ID? Any resident and temporary resident on U.S.
soil ages 18 and above. Again, this is for those who wish to use their driver's license or ID cards to board domestic flights in the U.S.
