In her first reaction after being named as the new Delhi Chief Minister, Atishi thanked her “guru” Arvind Kejriwal and stressed that even though the AAP national convenor is resigning later today, he will remain the CM for the party and two crore people population of the national capital. “I want to thank Delhi’s popular CM, my guru Arvind Kejriwal for giving me such a huge responsibility. It can happen only in AAP that a first-time politician can become the CM.

I come from a normal family. If I would have been in any other party, I won’t even have got a poll ticket. However, Arvind Kejriwal trusted me, made me an MLA, minister and today given me a responsibility to become the CM.

I am happy that Arvind Kejriwal has shown so much trust on me, but more than that I am sad because my elder brother Arvind Kejriwal is resigning today. I want to say today on behalf of AAP MLAs and two crore people of Delhi that Delhi has only one CM and his name is Arvind Kejriwal,” Delhi minister Atishi said during a press conference after being named as CM Arvind Kejriwal’s successor in a meeting of the party’s legislators. The decision to appoint Atishi as the new CM of Delhi came after a legislative party meeting was chaired by Arvind Kejriwal at his Delhi residence earlier today, wherein Atishi’s name was proposed.

Kejriwal is expected to tender his resignation later today, and will also meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4.30 pm. Atishi further accused the BJP of “conspiring to create difficulties” for Arvind Kejriwal.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has conspired to create difficulties for Arvind Kejriwal,” she said. “Arvind Kejriwal said that the decision of the Supreme Court (that he can continue being the Chief Minister) is not enough. He said that if only the people of Delhi reimpose faith in him, he will become the Chief Minister again,” Atishi added.
