A THEATRE group is set to relive the days when a colliery and its band were community staples. St Joseph's Players will perform 'Brassed Off' at St Joseph's Hall on Chapel Street from April 8 to April 12. The play tells the story of a fictional town's struggle to save its mine from closure, echoing the real battles faced in Leigh over 30 years ago.
The show will feature professional musicians performing brass tunes as the soundtrack to the miners' campaign. Set in the fictional town of Grimley, the play revolves around the local pit being labelled 'uneconomic'. This decision causes strained relationships and hard choices for families facing an uncertain future.
(Image: Supplied) The colliery brass band, a key part of the town's identity, adds laugh-out-loud humour with their attempt to reach the national finals at London's Royal Albert Hall. St Joseph's Players' chairperson, Gabrielle Fitzsimons, said: "Brassed Off has it all: laughter, tears, a live brass band, and a story that recalls the industry upon which communities like Leigh were built. "It’s one of our favourite productions, and certainly one not to be missed.
" Tickets for the show, priced at £12, or £6 for under-16s, are available now online. The show begins at 7.30pm.
Please note that all tickets are reserved seating, and any unsold tickets will be made available on the door..
