A theatre company will perform a musical about the Titanic on the 113th anniversary of its sinking. Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS) will be performing Titanic the Musical at the Plaza Theatre in Romsey from April 15 to April 19. The musical is based on the experiences of those on board the Titanic, which set sail from Southampton on April 10, 1912, and sank on April 15, 1912.
The show depicts the characters and stories from the wealthy elite in first class to the hopeful immigrants in third class, as well as the Titanic's dedicated crew members. (Image: Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society) Director Adam Rush said: "Working on Titanic the Musical has been a challenging, yet highly rewarding, process.
"This story comes with so much historical significance and local importance, and this has been a fascinating discussion topic in rehearsals. "We have treated this show much more like a play than what most people would expect from a musical. "It’s intricate, detailed, and realistic.
We hope this shines through onstage." The show opens with the ship’s departure from Southampton, brimming with optimism and dreams of a new life. The first act explores the aspirations, fears and struggles of passengers across all three classes on board.
The ship’s captain, designer, owner and crew are also shown, each of whom have a different perception of how to run a ship on its maiden voyage. As Titanic hits an iceberg, chaos and desperation unfold in the second act, with many of the crew and passengers making heroic acts and sacrifices. Themes of class and gender division, pride and human resilience are explored, culminating in a dramatic and moving conclusion.
Adam added: "I first encountered Titanic the Musical in my teens and, married with a love for the 1997 James Cameron film, it has always been a work that I have wanted to stage. "This production has been a fascinating journey for all involved discovering the stories of Titanic, its people and the lives and families it has touched in the local community. "This show has been a puzzle to put together, but the result is a story that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure.
" Titanic the Musical runs nightly from April 15 to April 19 at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased on the RAODS website.
