The world's thinnest smartphone's battery life is hard to believe - Oppo Find N5 review

Not a OnePlus Open 2. | The Oppo Find N5 is the world's thinnest foldable smartphone, but despite its slim design, it comes with a few limitations. The foldable phone features a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, a periscope camera, and an extra-large battery. Is Oppo already highlighting what the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can't offer?

With its Find N3 successor, Oppo has succeeded in creating a near-perfect adaptation of a classic smartphone thanks to its slim and lightweight design. Added to this is the significant advantage of having an 8.12-inch screen with you at all times.

The Find N5 is not only the world's thinnest foldable phone, but thanks to Oppo's "anti-aging treatment," it's also wrinkle (crease) free, like no other foldable phone. In addition to this outstanding user experience, Oppo has also packed in a wealth of powerful hardware. The 7-core version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, while nominally weaker than the standard version, still manages to offer high-level performance.

Stylus support, great speakers, and bright displays can also be found on the Find N5's plus side. Despite the weight reduction compared to its predecessor, Oppo has also managed to significantly increase the battery capacity, and the result is excellent battery life that almost outclasses the competition. Due to the design, buyers will undoubtedly have to accept some limitations compared to the high-end competition.

The cameras aren't top-notch, and the high throttling is anything but perfect. We also miss the 6 GHz Wi-Fi band and transparency in the choice of materials. The Find N2's form factor is more usable in everyday life, and this is something we would also welcome for the next generation of the Oppo foldable device to give it a unique selling point.

The global version of the Oppo Find N5 has 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of flash storage and is available for approximately $1,789. Prices for our Chinese version of the Oppo phone start at $1,594 at Trading Shenzhen. To the best of our current knowledge, the global variant will not be launched in Europe either.

With its Find N5, Oppo takes over from the Honor Magic V3 as the world's thinnest foldable phone. But, in addition to the extremely slim case, it also offers exciting features: The Oppo phone has an 8.12-inch display and uses a 5,600 mAh battery, which means that the energy storage device stores almost 30 percent more power than the battery found in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 .

Performance and photo quality are also promising thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite and a Hasselblad triple camera with a periscope telephoto lens. Unlike its predecessor, the Find N5 will not be released in Europe as a OnePlus Open 2. With a case thickness of just 4.

2 millimeters, the Find N5 is the thinnest phone on the foldable market. At 8.9 millimeters when folded, the Oppo phone is barely thicker than a conventional smartphone.

The same applies to the weight, as Oppo slimmed down its XXL foldable device to 229 grams, making it barely heavier than an Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max at 227 grams. This has been achieved, among other things, by using a newly developed titanium hinge. The titanium flexion hinge feels robust in everyday situations and has a nice rigidity.

Its durability is certified by TÜV Rheinland. In addition to its beautiful design and narrow display bezels, the Find N5 is also waterproof, comes with IPX9 certification, and exudes a premium feel. The Find N5 also features the alert slider button typical of OnePlus smartphones, which can be used to mute notifications.

While the display on the front is protected by classic nanocrystal glass, the inner panel comes with a Schott UTG special glass, which has a top layer made of a specially developed anti-shock elastomer material. Overall, the Chinese manufacturer's foldable device offers an excellent feature set, which includes Bluetooth 5.4, USB OTG, an IR blaster, Miracast, and near-field communication.

According to Oppo, the NFC chip encrypts the collected AI and user data, which is protected from data theft by an additional security chip. The fast USB 3.2 port also supports wired image output.

Compatibility with iOS and iPadOS devices is also worth mentioning, allowing seamless sharing of photos, videos, and files. With the "O+ Connect" app, the Find N5 also functions as a keyboard, trackpad, and external multi-touch screen. The Find N5 comes with Android 15 and is complemented by the company's ColorOS 15.

According to the manufacturer, the foldable phone will receive five years of security updates, but Oppo hasn't disclosed how many Android upgrades you can expect. Update support is, therefore, satisfactory, but Samsung and Google have shown that longer updates are possible. Of course, AI is also a must-have with ColorOS.

Version 15 includes a new AI search and numerous AI functions, such as AI call summaries and AI photo editing. The very useful "Boundless View" feature, which allows three apps to be used simultaneously beyond the display's boundaries, is also on board. Other manufacturers should take immediate inspiration from this.

The Find N5's packaging is plastic-free and printed using soybean-based inks. According to the manufacturer's sustainability report, 45 percent of the fibers used in the packaging originate from recycled materials. We found no information regarding the use of recycled materials for the foldable device itself.

User repairability is also not a priority and is difficult to verify. In terms of transparency, Oppo has a lot of catching up to do. Irrespective of whether you choose the Chinese or global version, the Oppo foldable is well-equipped in terms of wireless bands and can be used without any compromises in German-speaking countries.

For Wi-Fi connections, the Find N5 offers the best of the best with the current Wi-Fi 7 standard, but our CN version unfortunately doesn't use the 6 GHz channel to establish a connection. Therefore, we only used the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with our Wi-Fi 6E reference router.

The transfer speeds with the Asus ROG Rapture GT AXE11000 weren't truly consistent, but we measured a peak of almost 1,800 Mbps when receiving data. However, the Find N5 is significantly slower when sending data. On a bike ride, we compared the Find N5's tracking performance to the Garmin Venu 2.

Positioning with the Oppo phone is done using dual-band GNSS and is accurate to within about 3 meters. The total distance measured is very similar to the Garmin smartwatch, and only minor deviations are noticeable in the detailed route. Those who opt for the global version of the Find N5 have the option of integrating an eSIM into the system.

However, the Chinese version of Color OS doesn't offer this feature. However, dual SIM is onboard, and Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE are also supported. The call quality through the earpiece is very satisfactory, although our conversation partners sometimes sounded a bit muffled.

Despite its ultra-thin design, Oppo has equipped each of the Find N5's Hasselblad-branded triple camera lenses with optical image stabilization. However, compromises have still had to be made with a foldable device. For example, the 1/1.

56-inch format found in the 50 MP main camera's sensor is quite small, but this doesn't affect photo quality in daylight. Especially when you consider that the predecessor featured a larger sensor, the step up to the Sony LYT700 isn't ideal. But even in the dark, the Oppo phone still manages to preserve plenty of detail in the Find N5's images with a low noise level.

The periscope camera has a high-resolution 50 MP sensor and also delivers good results in sufficient light. With a lossless magnification of 3x, it also enables telephoto macro shots. The 8 MP lens for ultra-wide-angle photos falls somewhat short, with its pronounced blurring and some image artefacts in the test shots.

While the Find N5's main camera enables 10-bit videos, including Dolby Vision and detailed recordings at a resolution of up to 4K and 60 frames per second, changing subjects during a video is only possible without HDR at 4K30. Under controlled lighting conditions, we analyzed the main camera's color reproduction compared to the actual reference colors. The 50 MP lens in the ColorChecker passport revealed overexposure, especially in bright colors.

We identified the Find N5 to have some outliers in color fidelity (>10). Our Chinese version comes with an 80-watt, fast-charging power adapter, a data/charging cable (USB-C to USB-A), a SIM pin, a quick-start guide, and a protective case. A plastic film is also installed on both screens, and a protective case is included.

Our device lender, Trading Shenzhen, has also added to the included extras with an EU adapter for the charger and a USB OTG adapter. Our imported device comes with a 12-month warranty. Trading Shenzhen offers the option of shipping the smartphone to a German address in the event of a warranty claim.

The two OLED touchscreens have a sampling rate of up to 240 Hz and respond quickly to finger inputs. Animations are also displayed smoothly, thanks to the 120 Hz panels, and the Oppo Pen is also supported on both panels. Oppo also offers Samsung's Flex mode, an extended display option when folded, for its foldable phone.

The Find N5 can be used like a traditional smartphone thanks to its 20.7:9 aspect ratio external screen. With its large 8.

12-inch panel, the foldable phone also offers plenty of room for multitasking. However, before purchasing, potential buyers should be aware that the large screen is less suitable when using an app due to its unusual aspect ratio. A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button.

It's positioned somewhat high but unlocks the Oppo phone very reliably. A rather insecure 2D facial recognition system using the 8 MPix cameras can also be used. The Find N5's foldable, dual-shielded flexible display has a resolution of 412 PPI and a diagonal of 8.

12 inches, giving the Oppo phone slightly more screen real estate than its competitors. Furthermore, the inner panel appears virtually wrinkle-free since we were unable to detect any noticeable crease in everyday use. The manufacturer also touts its foldable phone as possessing a "Minimized Crease" certification from TÜV Rheinland.

In our measurements, the 120 Hz LTPO panel achieved a peak brightness of 2,026 cd/m22 (APL18). To protect your eyes when viewing the flickering OLED panel, Oppo uses high-frequency PWM dimming (2,160 Hz) when the screen brightness is below 70 nits. Using the oscilloscope, the Find N5 flickers at 120 Hz at higher brightness, increasing the frequency to 240 Hz as the brightness increases.

We tested the color calibration using the Calman analysis software and a photo spectrometer. While the Natural profile uses DCI P3, the Find N5 uses the smaller sRGB color space in the Pro profile. The latter delivered the best color fidelity in our measurements, and the deviations are clearly within the target range (<3).

Regardless of the panel used, the Oppo phone made an excellent impression outdoors, although the plastic film on the main display was noticeably reflective. Viewing angle stability, however, is very good, and the drop in brightness is minimal. The secondary display uses a 6.

62-inch AMOLED panel and has a similar peak brightness of 2,198 cd/m2 (APL18). Just like the main screen, the refresh rate varies between 1 and 120 Hz, thanks to LTPO technology. With a resolution of 2,616 x 1,140 pixels, the outer screen has a pixel density of 431 PPI.

The Find N5 is the first foldable smartphone with the Snapdragon 8 Elite , However, only the version with five performance cores is used here instead of six. This means that Qualcomm is likely to also include faulty chips that have defects in one core during production and market them at a lower price. However, this does not affect everyday performance; the Oppo phone still offers sufficient performance reserves even when using multiple apps simultaneously.

However, the benchmarks appear somewhat different. The missing core is particularly evident in the Geekbench multi-core test, and the NPU could also be compromised, given the poor results in Geekbench AI. Qualcomm has not provided any further details regarding either the Adreno 830's number of shaders or the clock speeds in the 7-core variant.

Based on the Find N5's offscreen scores in GFXBench, it can be assumed that the GPU is also subject to limitations. Compared to other s martphones with this graphics chip, the Oppo phone is sometimes 20 percent less powerful. The main display was also used for the onscreen values.

The Find N5's browser speed leaves nothing to be desired in everyday use with websites loading quickly and scrolling smoothly. However, the foldable phone delivered weak results in browser benchmarks. When it comes to storage, the Find N5 impresses with its high throughput rates.

The Oppo phone possesses the UFS 4.0 standard and delivers very good read and write speeds. We analyzed the performance of the installed Adreno GPU by also taking a closer look at current Android games beyond the benchmark package.

With our partner, GameBench , we determined the exact frame rates for two games from the Play Store as examples. To achieve this, we used the larger internal screen. It is, without question, fun to play games using the large OLED panel, but gamers should probably give the Find N5 a body swerve.

Firstly, HFR gaming above 100fps isn't possible, and secondly, the Oppo phone throttles the frame rate very quickly and significantly in demanding games such as Genshin Impact. A reduction in system performance due to the Find N5's dissipated heat was evident in the 3DMark stress tests. We measured a throttling of approximately 50 percent.

The case's surface temperatures were very heterogeneous in our load scenario using the Burnout benchmark but remained at a non-critical level even in the hot spot area. Headphones can be connected via a USB port. Anyone who prefers using Bluetooth for wireless playback can choose from a wide range of codecs The Oppo smartphone's stereo speakers offer very good sound, even if the super-high frequencies lack depth.

However, the speakers produce very decent depth with a touch of bass. Despite its extremely slim case, Oppo has significantly increased its N3 successor's battery capacity to 5,600 mAh. The battery can be charged at a maximum of 80 watts, and wireless charging is supported up to 50 watts.

With the appropriate power adapter, the charging process takes just under 50 minutes. We measured the power consumption using the large main screen. At 1.

4 watts, the energy consumption is relatively low for an XXL foldable phone, especially when running idle. With its 8.12-inch display and an adjusted display brightness of 150 cd/m2, the Find N5's stamina is extremely good for a foldable - almost 22 hours in our Wi-Fi test.

This is an area where the foldable competition lags behind, with the Honor Magic V3 falling short of the Oppo phone by over 8 hours, With continuous video playback, it even kept going for 15 hours. With the smaller external panel, the Find N5 could add a few more hours to this total, which would put us into record-breaking territory. The Oppo Find N5 is a lightweight, comfortable, and incredibly thin mini tablet despite having the dimensions of a normal smartphone.
