The world's smallest dinosaur egg was found in China. Having been in the ground for 80 million years, it is perfectly preserved. According to the researchers, as many as six fossils were found, but only one egg was preserved in perfect condition.

The discovery dates back to the late Cretaceous period and gives an incredible insight into the reproductive habits of dinosaurs, TheSun reports . Six egg fossils were unearthed from a well-preserved nest accidentally found at a construction site in Ganzhou, China. According to the research team, the most complete fossil egg is only 29 mm long.

This finding broke the previous record for the smallest dinosaur egg fossil, which was approximately 45.5 mm long and was found in China's Zhejiang province. Scientists emphasize that the latest discovery provides new insights into the evolutionary history of dinosaurs.

After analyzing the eggshells with the help of advanced technologies, experts were able to determine that the eggs probably belong to theropods other than birds. It is known that theropods were a group of predatory dinosaurs that included such well-known species as the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex. And the discovery of the eggs sheds light on the reproductive habits of theropods.

The research team also plans to use micro-computed tomography to reconstruct the fossilized nest to unlock more knowledge about how the eggs were laid and preserved. Scientists emphasize that the new discovery increases the diversity of known dinosaur eggs from the late Cretaceous period. Only verified information is available on the OBOZ.
