Many petrolheads dream of having a garage or warehouse packed full of desirable classic, luxury, and performance models , despite often costing millions of pounds to achieve. However, some lucky car fanatics live this dream, with the largest car collection owned by an unlikely figure. Featuring more than 7,000 cars, the biggest collection of vehicles is owned by Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th Sultan of Brunei.
Reigning over the Asian nation that has raised a lot of revenue from oil and gas , it is only natural that the Sultan has a large number of interesting vehicles, including classic and supercars , which are believed to be worth a combined figure of around £4 billion. Largely inherited from the Sultan of Brunei's brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, in 1997, the collection even boasts other records within, including the largest private collection of Rolls-Royces at aproximately 150 examples. Whilst the impressive collection is closely guarded by a bombproof front gate, those given a rare opportunity to visit the site housing the 7,000 cars over the years have revealed a number of interesting and unusual models .
The Sultan of Brunei's car collection is housed in a building spanning eight floors, with the ground level dedicated to a wide range of Porsche performance cars. The majority of Porsches owned by the collector are 911s, spanning over the model's production run of 61 years and counting, but others include 928 GTSs, 944s, and 968s, most of which date from the 1980s and 90s. Some cars within this level have left the fleet, including a metallic blue 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.
6 that was especially commissioned for the Sultan, which was subsequently owned by Jensen Button before being auctioned for more than £200,000. Another popular marque within the Sultan's collection is Ferrari, with the building being used to store a wide range of unusual examples of the Italian brand's supercars. These include a number of Ferrari 550s from the late 1990s that feature infra-red cameras for night vision and several right-hand drive Testarossas, a model that was very rarely converted.
In a separate building, the Sultan of Brunei also owns an extensive range of Ferrari 456s, including four station wagons and four Venice Cabriolets, a one-of-a-kind F90 Stradale, and a particularly unique right-hand drive 1960s 275 GTS, featuring air conditioning and a radio. However, not everything in the Sultan of Brunei's car collection is an all-powerful supercar, with the leader also owning a significant amount of famous classics. Nestled amongst the Aston Martins, Jaguars, and Bentleys are a number of everyday UK-made classics, including three original Minis, an Austin FX4 taxi, and a Ford Granada.
The Sultan is also said to own no fewer than four Volkswagen Beetle-based beach buggies, a pair of Renault 5 Turbo 2s, and for when he wishes to swap four wheels for two, a staggering 18 Goldwing motorcycles..
