Thanks to the first Wicked movie and its upcoming sequel , there’s some Wizard of Oz fever going around. The original 1939 film celebrated its 85th birthday last year ahead of Wicked, and now it’s getting the spotlight once more thanks to the Las Vegas Sphere. Beginning in August, the venue will provide a “fully immersive experience” for Wizard of Oz that will play on the Sphere’s 160,000-square foot screen.
Made in collaboration with Google, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Magnopus, this new version of the film will be “enhanced” with current technology while “maintaining the integrity of the original.” Sphere hasn’t detailed what immersive elements will be featured yet.
The film is part of Sphere’s new focus on original entertainment outside of concerts and live events, and is the first older movie to get an immersive expereince from the Vegas destination. According to Sphere Entertainment CEO Jim Dolan, the immersive experiences will provide “a diverse slate that leverages Sphere’s power as an experiential medium.” Both Wizard and its successor experience From the Edge are hoped to push the company’s vision “in different ways.
” If that sounds exciting to you, the Wizard of Oz will open at the Sphere on August 28..
