Kerb-side 'barriers' could be installed to protect people and houses on what has been described as a village's "dangerous" main road. Councillor for Bury's Radcliffe North and Ainsworth ward, Jo Lancaster, lives near Church Street, Ainsworth, and says some residents have had their house crashed into seven times due to vehicles losing control. In the latest incident, emergency services were called on Wednesday, March 19, to a two-car crash on the road with one car taking out a lamppost and narrowly missing a house.
The cause of this crash is not known but it has promoted renewed calls for measures following a number of incidents on the road. "I mean where do I start, the speed at which some people drive along that road is just criminal," Cllr Lancaster said. " (Image: UGC) Wednesday's crash "I've got a meeting with residents in Ainsworth and I've reported to the council's relevant department. "I think it's time we looked at installing barriers or bollards to protect the houses and prevent them from being damaged further. "I've spoken to some people and they've had cars crash into their homes up to seven times now, others have experienced it two or three times into their garden fences.
" Cllr Lancaster also raised concerns over pupils from Christ Church Ainsworth Primary School could be at risk from speeding drivers. When quizzed on whether a speed camera would be a more appropriate measure to curb careless driving, Cllr Lancaster cited Bury Council's hesitancy to install one, as reportedly, the maintenance fees would be substantial and funds raised from fines wouldn't go directly back to the council. She added: "Does somebody have to die for something serious to be done about it? "With the most recent crash, reviewing the footage it seems a man had literally only crossed the road about 40 seconds before the incident.
"Had he been unlucky, he would have died, it's a dangerous road." We have previously reported how measures have been taken, including changing the road layout to make the road safer The measures formed part of Bury's Road Safety Initiative to improve roads at locations where existing speeds, rat running traffic and accident levels are of concern to residents. In just one period there were four car accidents in the space of four weeks on Church Street in March 2023 with residents describing the road as an 'airport runway'.
Changes which were implemented last yea r include a new raised puffin crossing near the village store on Church Street, the establishment of a mini roundabout at the junction of Bradley Fold Road and Church Street, the introduction of new traffic islands and the widening of others to reduce lane widths, the raising of an existing puffin crossings near Tommy Lane, and changes to some road markings..
