The Cotswolds may be a place of beauty all year round, but the area transforms into a magical winter wonderland during Christmas . Add a sprinkle of snow to the charming cobblestone streets, and you'll feel like you've stepped right into a festive dream. Bourton-on-the-Water may take the crown as the most festive village in the Cotswolds.

Also dubbed the "Venice of the Cotswolds" because of its five picturesque stone bridges crossing the River Windrush, the village is bursting with Christmas charm. The village's golden-stone cottages, some over 300 years old, add to its timeless appeal, making it picture-perfect at every corner. The village website gently reminds visitors that "Bourton is not a theme park, it does not open and close nor is there an entry fee", yet it promises a delightful day out, especially during the festive period.

Along the water's edge, shops, cafes, restaurants, and tea rooms beckon, while cobbled lanes reveal cosy pubs and hidden seasonal delights. A giant floating Christmas tree becomes the centrepiece each year, continuing a tradition from the 1950s, with its lights shimmering in the river to create an enchanting atmosphere. Not to be missed is the Victorian Christmas Shop, a haven for festive enthusiasts open all year round, offering baubles and trinkets among other treasures, ensuring a warm welcome to Christmas shoppers.

Other attractions that are just as delightful during the festive season as they are throughout the year include the Cotswold Motoring Museum with its vintage cars and nostalgic toys, Birdland with its exotic birds and life-sized dinosaur models, and the charming Model Village, a 1930s-scale replica of Bourton itself. For those feeling peckish or in need of a festive pint, The Kingsbridge, Mousetrap, and Duke of Wellington all offer a fantastic Sunday roast, reports the Mirror . Visitors to the village have been quick to leave glowing reviews on Trip Advisor.

@CJohnP, who visited in September, described the village as "One of a kind", adding it's a "Highly rated and unique place to visit." @dnowland_12 labelled it a "Wonderful, wonderful village", saying "We were happy to just wander around and enjoy all the cottages, side streets and riverside walks. More than enough pubs, cafe's and attractions, a must to visit if you are in the area.

" Another reviewer, @Sachin G, simply called it an "Amazing, beautiful, romantic place." The ancient city of Gloucester, a mere 45-minute journey from Bourton on the Water, offers direct train services to London and further afield. Looking for more from MyLondon?
