Indigenous activists celebrate Aboriginal connection to country and culture, but are violent deaths also connected to Aboriginal culture?

A coronial inquest conducted in the Northern Territory last year investigated the deaths of four Aboriginal women who had suffered severe violence including stabbing, torture, and burning. This was part of a broader examination of the deaths of eighty-seven women killed by their partners, predominantly Aboriginal. Worse, deaths and domestic violence in the Northern Territory are predicted to increase by 73 per cent over the next ten years.

Indigenous activists celebrate Aboriginal connection to country and culture, but are these violent deaths connected to Aboriginal culture? Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price writes that “Aboriginal domestic violence is ingrained in traditional culture”. In Victoria, the Yoorrook Justice Commission finished taking public submissions in November 2024. Its findings are intended to inform a treaty the Victorian Premier wants to sign before the next state election.
