Newcastle United are monitoring the Marc Guéhi situation at Crystal Palace with the club on the look out for a new centre-back. The Magpies put forward a final bid in the region of £70million for the England centre-back last summer before it was swiftly rejected by Steve Parish. A scramble for the Crystal Palace's captain is set to restart this summer as Liverpool and Chelsea keen on the star - while Chronicle Live has also learned that Newcastle can't be discounted from the race to sign the star.
However, his price tag will have to be reduced after the sky high quotations that came Newcastle's way last August. Back then, sporting director Paul Mitchell went above and beyond with Parish to place an astronomical bid only to be told no. Parish and Palace are now in danger of losing the centre-back for nothing if they aren't careful.
If a sensible price can't be agreed this summer, it's understood that Guehi could well see out his contract at Palace and become available on a free transfer. And should that be the scenario, Newcastle will very much be in line to try to sign Guehi with the player keen on the move last summer. Still just 24, Guehi could only watch on as the goalposts kept getting moved on the deal.
Indeed, whenever Newcastle upped their offer they were rejected before the Magpies decided to leave the room. Parish said at the time: "There is a price and a situation where we might consider it. If you want a superstar player, you've got to pay superstar money.
" Howe said at the time : "There isn't a bottomless pit of money. We're not able to spend that way. Everything that we do has a long-term consequence.
So you've got to be very sure whatever you do is right for the long-term future and short-term future of the club.".
