If you describe Surrey to someone outside of the county, they’re likely to say it’s “posh”. Surrey has a reputation for being one of the wealthiest counties, famed for its beautiful scenery, pricey properties, and proximity to London. Londoners may even be thinking of packing up and moving to greener pastures (quite literally) because you can be at London Waterloo in just 30 minutes from some Surrey train stations.
Alternatively, many still work from home as a hangover from lockdown and might fancy swapping cramped flats for more outdoor space. Not all of Surrey was born with a silver spoon, and while we think our home is pretty great, many Reddit users have debated whether certain parts of the county actually live up to the posh status, or whether they are sub-Surrey standard. The subreddit question: “Can you think of Towns in Surrey that Londoners automatically think are ‘posh’ but really ARE NOT? " riled up users, bringing about a host of quarrels and some controversial comments in the thread that may even raise a few eyebrows.

Users highlighted that The Jam’s tune A Town Called Malice is about Paul Weller’s hometown, Woking. However, as Woking divides opinions, it received 45 upvotes.
Woking has received a lot of love in recent years, with a new town centre, fancy flats and shops as well as being spoilt with RHS Wisley right on its doorstep. Another spot that grabbed a lot of attention was Epsom, with many users asking why it ranks on “best places to live” lists. One user stated: “I've never understood how Epsom is consistently placed high on the list of best places to live in the UK,” with 22 upvotes.
It was mentioned that Epsom has lovely countryside surrounding it and is famed for horse racing and striking architecture. The Georgian town also has a regular market in the centre, with farmed goods and artisan items. Eyebrow-raising mentions featured the likes of quaint Godalming and Haslemere .
One wrote: “Godalming - whilst it’s smart and picturesque there are always groups of teenagers drinking and smoking.” Some may be surprised to see Goldaming on the list, as it was voted for on Surrey’s poshest places subreddit. It’s also got a big Waitrose - so it can’t be that bad.
Similarly for Haslemere, it seems having pretty properties and a big Waitrose just doesn’t cut the mustard, with one user posting: “Right hear me out on this one: Haslemere. Haslemere has a posh side (the waitrose side) but the spoons there is the fightiest one in the county. “Weyhill on a Saturday night by the kebab van is the savannah watering hole for the local teenage wildlife.
I once saw a man so fucked up on drugs get berated by two women who he'd obviously wronged - they threatened to run him over.” Named one of the best for commuters, Haslemere also has great links to London, and the A3 which runs right down to the coast. It’s also got great schools and is only 40 minutes away from the beach.
Weybridge cropped up on the thread, which proved to be the most divisive. While one user believes there are some lovely private roads, they added the town is awful, and so are most of the houses near it, receiving one upvote in total. This was met with disagreement, with another hitting back: "If you don’t think Weybridge is posh, I don’t know where you think is actually posh," gaining 15 upvotes.
Another responded: "Live in Weybridge can second this Weybridge is pretty nice compared to other parts of Surrey." A third defended Weybridge, stating, "I've lived in Weybridge for 3 years and only have nice things to say about it. I feel you have got very unlucky in Weybridge and can only apologise for the bad experiences you have had here.
