Conservationists have been remembering a Nottingham city centre pub where criminals facing the death penalty would have one last drink before their demise. Hilary Silvester, of the Nottingham Civic Society, said criminals would be taken to the Nags Head, in Mansfield Road, before they were hanged at the Gallows - where the Rock Cemetery stands now at the junction of Forest Road East and the A60. She explained criminals were taken to the pub - which closed several years ago before it was transformed into student flats - after they were condemned at the former County Court in High Pavement .

It was a pub that has this relationship with something that is a bit spooky and horrible but historic." Back in 2019, plans were tabled to convert the old pub into a house in multiple occupation (HMO) for students.

The venue had closed by this point and people at the time had their say on the plans - and workers at a nearby pub said they'd have preferred the Nags Head to have stayed in operation as it was. Speaking previously, Andy Walters, of the Lincolnshire Poacher, a pub across from the Nags Head, said: "We want pubs to stay open. Some people think competition is a bad thing but sometimes the competition is a good thing.

" The development was headed by Megaclose Ltd, which specialises in student accommodation throughout Nottingham..
