The deal, of which the terms are not yet known, gives Shepherd another year on his contract as he was set to enter the final year of the three-year, $15 million deal that he signed in 2023.
Shepherd has started 30 of his 33 games for New Orleans over the last two seasons after spending five seasons with the New York Jets. Shepherd's extension is another move by New Orleans to address the defensive line. Earlier on Monday, the team traded a 2026 seventh-round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for Davon Godchaux.
Shepherd had only 1 1/2 sacks for the Saints last season after a 3 1/2 campaign in 2023. The 31-year-old has been reliable, however, as he has only missed one game in that span. He missed last year's Week 16 showdown against the Green Bay Packers because of an eye injury.
Shepherd was set to have a $7 million cap hit in 2025 with a $4.8 million base salary, though those figures could — and likely will — change after his extension..
