A Horwich Town Centre pub wants to prove a point after it applied to open into the early hours for the holiday season. The Victoria & Albert applied for a Temporary Event Notice for the week between Boxing Day and New Year's Day. At the moment the pub is allowed to open until midnight other than on Fridays and on Saturdays when the pub is allowed to open until 1am.
Under the Temporary Event Notice it would be allowed a later opening time of 3am. The Victoria & Albert's owner-operator, Matthew Rees, told a committee of councillors Maureen Flitcroft, Sean Fielding and Susan Priest he wants to prove a point at a meeting at the town hall on Wednesday (December 18). Mr Rees said: "This is not a money-making exercise. "In the long term I want a later licence so I want to show to the council and to the police it can be done safely and sensibly and there is scope for a later licence in Horwich Town Centre." Mr Rees said the pub is a "tight ship" with "zero tolerance" to bad behaviour since he took over at the start of this year.
Following a refurbishment it is only open as of a few months ago. PC Ben Brookfield, of Greater Manchester Police, said there were concerns for what is a residential area on the corner of Lee Lane and Mottram Street. ALSO READ: Bolton resident receives thousands for complaint to council .
PC Brookfield said: "There are concerns about the customers leaving at 3am considering some of the dates are some of the busiest dates on our calendar. "In the day the demographic is forties, fifties, but later on the demographic is younger which causes a challenge in terms of the prevention of public nuisance." The Victoria & Albert's application for a Temporary Event Notice for the week between Boxing Day and New Year's Day was approved by Cllr Flitcroft, Cllr Fielding and Cllr Priest.
It is allowed a later opening time of 3am for one week only. This article is by Jack Tooth. He is available at jack.
