Spain is banning no one. The proposal includes a two-level redesign that will enhance accessibility and create a more dynamic space. On the upper level, commercial galleries will open to the outside, allowing natural light and improving ventilation, while the lower level will house an agora for cultural activities and events.

Additionally, a colonnade with viewing platforms will be built at the entrance from Las Ramblas, providing a panoramic view of the square and its surroundings. One of the most innovative aspects of the project is the integration of spaces for art, commerce, and hospitality, which will encourage social interaction and stimulate economic activity in the area. A city heritage interpretation centre will also be created to offer visitors a closer look at Palma’s historical heritage.

Moreover, the new design takes into account the city’s high summer temperatures. Trees, green pavements, and awnings will be incorporated, creating a “climatic refuge” that will make the square more comfortable for citizens throughout the year. The project will also improve connectivity and accessibility in the area.

The section facing Las Ramblas will be pedestrianized, and the entrances to the underground parking will be relocated, improving the flow of both people and vehicles. Palma’s Mayor, Jaime Martínez, highlighted that this reform represents one of the city’s most significant investments in modernization, creating a new meeting point for both locals and tourists. The Plaza Mayor renovation aims not only to beautify the space but also to breathe new life into it, transforming it into a cultural and social epicentre.

Work is expected to begin at the end of 2026, after the project’s tender phase, marking the start of a new era for one of Palma’s most iconic squares. The Plaza Mayor renovation is undoubtedly a firm step towards a more modern, accessible, and cohesive city. Read more news around Spain .
