He left the group after they had bombed the quarantine zone in Denver, Colorado. In the games, once Ellie learns of Joel’s massacre of the Fireflies, who were only trying to heal the world, in his attempt to save her life, their relationship becomes strained, staying that way till Joel’s controversial murder by Abby in Part II.
