In 2023, Bella Ramsey took the world by storm in the highly anticipated TV adaptation of the popular game The Last of Us. The 21-year-old actor shared the screen with Pedro Pascal, playing Ellie Williams to his Joel Miller. The HBO series traces their journey together as Joel is tasked with escorting a teenage Ellie across a post-apocalyptic world, as they may be humanity's last hope for survival.
Despite impressing audiences with the role, this wasn't Bella's first time on-screen as they have been acting since childhood. Beginning as a hobby at the tender age of four, their first credited acting role came when they was just 13. Bella first caught the public eye with their portrayal of Lyanna Mormont in the sixth season of HBO's Game of Thrones, appearing in a total of nine episodes.
Since then, Bella has showcased their talent in shows like The Worst Witch and His Dark Materials, and lent their voice to a character in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, reports The Mirror US. As we eagerly await the second series of The Last of Us, let's delve into Bella's life. It was during the filming of the first season of The Last of Us that Bella received their autism diagnosis.
However, it was a conversation with a crew member on set, who had a neurodivergent child themselves, that prompted Bella to seek a formal diagnosis. Speaking to British Vogue about their autism, Bella admitted that receiving the diagnosis felt 'freeing'. They expressed: "The label of being autistic has been so helpful to me because that's helped me to understand myself, but gender and sexuality-wise, labels do not feel comfy for me in any capacity because I feel like I'm putting myself into a box.
I feel trapped. "It enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do." They also revealed how being hyperaware of mannerisms has been an asset in their acting career.
At the tender age of 14, Bella became a familiar face on the CBBC hit series The Worst Witch, portraying Mildred Hubble, a less-than-proficient magic student at Cackle's Academy. Bella joined the cast in 2017, embodying Mildred across three spellbinding seasons before opting out of the fourth, passing the wand to Lydia Page. Previously, Bella has opened up about the poignant reason behind their departure.
Speaking to Elle, Bella disclosed their battle with anorexia nervosa. Now 21, Bella acknowledged the rumours suggesting they quit due to mental health issues but clarified their stance. Bella stated: "I would say the more accurate description is that I had resolved a lot of my mental health problems by that point.
"And then the idea was that, 'I'm not going to do this fourth season because it's not worth it, because I'm in a better place now. This is not something that I want to continue to string out and have the recurring issues that stem from that first season. I don't need or want to do this anymore.
'" Bella recently divulged details about a unique phobia developed in their youth. The HBO celebrity has been battling emetophobia - an intense fear of vomiting or witnessing others throw up. In an open discussion on the Emetophobia-free podcast, they admitted: "It impacted pretty much every area of my life.
..I would be very conscious about what food I would eat on set, worried about if there was a bug going around and who looked ill and who didn't.
" Despite numerous attempts to tackle the phobia through self-help books and hypnotherapy, none delivered results until the Thrive Programme for Emetophobia provided relief. With enthusiasm, Bella stated: "It's not controlling my life anymore..
. I don't think about sick and I'm not scared..
.I don't have any limits on me anymore in terms of what I can and can't do depending on this phobia." The Last of Us Season 2 will air on Sunday, April 13, at 9 PM in the US, with it airing on April 14 in the UK.
