The Last of Us Season 2 is less than two weeks away, and before its premiere on HBO, Craig Mazin has spoken out about one of the main complaints about Bella Ramsey’s Ellie. The first season of The Last of Us , just like the game, ended on a spine-tingling note: Ellie made Joel promise that everything he told her about the Fireflies was true, he lied, and after a long pause, she said, “Okay.” We know Season 2 has a five-year time jump, picking up with Joel and Ellie living in Jackson.
That means she’s 19 years old (Ramsey is 21 in real life). According to Neil Druckmann, “when you’re watching Bella perform, you could just see this maturity behind their eyes.” Some people disagree, but Craig Mazin is convinced the show will win skeptics over.
The Last of Us showrunner “understands” Ellie criticisms in Season 2 In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Mazin spoke about showing a fight scene with Ellie early in the new season to address “how a small person fights with a big person.” “The answer is jiu-jitsu. I watch a lot of jiu-jitsu and I’ve specifically watched sessions where a small person is taking down a big person.
That’s how that would happen because nobody’s f**king around in this world,” he explained. Mazin “understands” when fans point out that Ramsey doesn’t look that different from the first season. “Ellie in the game looks much older.
Some people do change quite dramatically and some people don’t,” he said. “I’m not interested in the physical aspect — although I’ve been looking at Bella’s face for years while editing, and I can see that she’s certainly grown. I’m interested in the emotional maturity, and the change in personality.
Related The Last of Us: Minor game character will play major role in Season 2 “I’ve watched Bella grow and become independent and start to find her own two feet separate and apart from her parents, who are amazing — how do I figure out how to be my own person now and test that full independence? And I feel that in Ellie completely. So I understand where people are coming from, but when they watch this year, I think they’re going to see the difference.” In an earlier interview with GamesRadar , Druckmann praised Ramsey as “an incredible actor.
.. not only are they older, but they’ve also experienced so much trauma in Season 1.
“And so much things have happened in that five-year gap that that’s part of the mystery of the season – what happened in those five years,” he continued. “When you’re watching Bella perform, you could just see this maturity behind their eyes. That is, it seems very simple, and it’s very difficult to pull off and very few actors can pull up the way that they have.
