Sir Alex Ferguson made a huge amount of money at the Grand National , with one of his horses winning a race and others placing in the top three. The former Manchester United boss is passionate about racing and owns a total of 32 horses, several of which took to the Aintree course last week. One of his horses, Hitman, raced in the Grand National but was pulled up before the end of the contest.
Ferguson's fortunes turned in the very next event with Kalif Du Berlais crossing the line first in the Maghull Novices' Chase. It saw the legendary Scot win £67,524 before claiming another £12,732 thanks to L'Eau Du Sud coming home in third. The impressive 1-3 finish saw Ferguson land a total of £80,526 from the two horses.
Another one of his horses, Protektorat, also delivered a boost to Ferguson's bank balance. He finished second behind Jonbon in the Melling Chase, landing the United legend just over £57,000. Ferguson claimed another £21,200 in prize money when Regent's Stroll secured a runner-up spot in the Mersey Novices' Hurdle on Saturday.
It means his total winnings from the festival were in excess of £158,726. After that race, Ferguson was teased about the Red Devils in a playful interview with ITV Racing reporter Matt Chapman. They began chatting about horses but the conversation quickly moved to football and United's current struggles.
"Look at the positives, Sir Alex," said Chapman. " Manchester United would love to be second right now, wouldn't they?" Ferguson broke into a wry smile before firing back: "You're a bad man!" Chapman continued to joke about United, adding: " Manchester United and Manchester City play tomorrow. They say this is the worst shape both sides have ever been in going into a derby.
" Ferguson responded: "Well, thank you, you're having a field day." Chapman then revealed that he was a Tottenham supporter, prompting Ferguson to say with a cheeky grin: "We always beat Tottenham ." It came a month after Ferguson claimed an impressive win at Cheltenham through Caldwell Potter, who took victory in the Jack Richards Novices' Handicap Chase.
He could barely contain his delight while speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the race. "I think the jumping won it," said Ferguson. "What can I say? Great horse, it was a bonus.
Winning here last year with two was fantastic and doing it again this year is fantastic. Thank you very much.".
