The Handmaid's Tale returned to Hulu for its sixth and final series

Cherry Jones is a well-known and respected actor who is once again back on screens in The Handmaid's Tale. She first appeared in the Hulu series back in season two as June's mom, Holly Maddox. However, after viewers learned Holly had been captured and sent to the colonies very little information was given about what happened to her.

Fortunately fans finally have answers as Holly returned to the dystopian series in season six, episode one and revealed she managed to escape the colonies and had settled in Alaska. Holly is now working as a doctor to help refugees coming to Alaska and was finally reunited with June and her new granddaughter, Nichole. But what do we know about actress Cherry Jones who stars as Holly Maddox? Cherry was born in Tennessee to parents who were a teacher and flower shop owner.

Both were supportive of her interest in theatre and she grew up attending a local drama school. From there her passion for acting grew and she graduated from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. After graduation, Cherry went on to star in numerous films, shows and theatre productions.

She won two Tony Awards for Best Actress for her role in The Heiress and Doubt. On TV, Cherry is best known for her breakthrough role in The West Wing as Barbara Layton, and in 24 as President Allison Taylor. She's also starred in Transparent, Succession, Black Mirror and American Crime.

Her first film was Light of Day as Cindy Montgomery and she's also made appearances in Ocean's Twelve, Wine Country, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and more recently, The Sky is Everywhere. Cherry was in an 18-year relationship with Mary O'Connor but after they split, she began dating Sarah Paulson. She thanked Sarah, also an actress, in her speech when she accepted a Tony Awards for Best Actress in 2005.

The pair dated until they decided to split in 2009. Cherry married filmmaker Sophie Huber in 2015 and the pair have enjoyed a 10 year marriage. Cherry first appeared in the Hulu series in season two, episode three when she was mentioned in flashback scenes.

June Osborne star and leading actress Elisabeth Moss was incredibly excited to have Cherry as part of the cast. She told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018: "Cherry was my fantasy choice." Showrunner Bruce Miller also said Holly was also going to be an important character from day one.

"We've been thinking about her a lot. June's mother is a big character in the book and representative of an interesting kind of feminism that was seemingly more of that time," he said. The Handmaid's Tale is airing on Hulu now.
