To fluff or not to fluff, that is the question. Well, for the street stylers who graced the pavements of the world’s fashion capitals this January, it wasn’t so much a question, rather than a statement: go fluffy or go home. The big four fashion weeks may not have even started, but if the images coming in from the men’s and couture shows are anything to go by, we can confidently say that the fuzzy-textured jacket is the It-buy of the season.
It was when I was scrolling through the latest street-style shots earlier this week that the realisation struck me. It didn’t take me long to stumble across one show-goer bulked-out in a teddy bear-beige, faux-fur jacket, and then, seconds later, another materialised, this time in a shade of Cookie Monster cobalt. Three more followed in quick succession, each one more voluminous than the next.
January 2025’s fashion week album was starting to resemble a Sesame Street casting call. So what’s behind the fashion crowd’s newfound obsession with preternaturally pouffy outerwear? There’s no doubt that the mobwife aesthetic is a driving force behind the fluffy fanaticism – its acrylic-taloned, femme fatale energy took great pleasure in smothering quiet luxury in its rhinestone-studded bosom early last year, and in turn, ushered in a tidalwave of extroverted trends. It didn’t take long for fashion’s favourite It-girls to step out in The Sopranos -worthy faux-fur coats, dark sunglasses and gravity-defying blowdries.
We’ve also seen a rising interest, particularly amongst Gen Zs, in the “I got it at a carboot sale” aesthetic , by which we mean a more thrown-together, eclectic approach to styling that incorporates a hodgepodge of pieces, many of which look like they’ve been fished out of the wardrobe of an octogenarian countess, but then paired with retro Adidas trackies and a baseball cap. In fact, second-hand stores should be your first port of call for this look – you can find infinite unbranded options, from fluffy shearlings to cosy faux-furs, at very reasonable prices on eBay and Etsy. Whether you go for the casual fluffy-jacket-and-jeans look, as favoured by the street-style crowd, or fully lean into the Carmela Soprano leopard-print and faux-fur fabulousness, know that this is a trend that will deliver on main character energy – even when you’re feeling a little more “supporting role”.
