Essex is famed for the number of celebrities that you can see in the county's restaurants and pubs. One of Essex's pubs is loved not just for its "superb" Sunday dinners, but also has a crazy history - as over 300 years ago, it was literally fit for a king. Established in 1679 as a coaching inn, The King's Head in Chipping Ongar is the oldest brick-fronted building on Chipping Ongar High Street.
It is named after King James II, who is believed to have stayed here during his reign. This Grade II listed building is home to a traditional lounge area with an open fire, a comfortable bar, a function room, and a 100-seat restaurant, complete with a full-length open kitchen. It has a Mediterranean-based menu but also serves your typical pub grub and Sunday dinners.

It was listed as one of the best beer gardens in the county by Muddy Stilettos. Muddy Stilettos said: "Laced with outdoor lighting, swanky lounging sets and modern bistro furniture, The King’s Head courtyard is a smart choice for chic swillers.
Nab a cushioned sofa, order a bottle of something bubbly, and people-watch while you tuck into one of the pub’s signature wood-fired pizzas." Hayley Finch reviewed the spot on Google, saying: "Wondered into the King's Head for a drink and the smell of great food enticed us into the resturant. Very friendly staff and our server recommended the Lamb Rib Roast Special, it was exceptional!" Helen Gore added: "Went for an impromptu family Sunday meal.
