March is a critical month for gardeners, a top flower expert has revealed.

As the days grow longer and the soil begins to warm, it’s the perfect time to lay the groundwork to ensure you have a vibrant and healthy garden come summer. But there’s one job that should be on the top of everyone’s list, says Elise Harlock, brand manager at Prestige Flowers ; mulching. "Mulching is key to retaining soil moisture, stopping weeds, and enriching the soil with nutrients," says Elise.

"By tackling this task in March, you set your garden up for success throughout the growing season. I would say if you were going to do one thing in your garden this month, it should be this.” Mulching acts as a protective barrier for the soil, keeping it safe from temperature changes and prevents the growth of irritating weeds.

It also helps retain moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering during the hotter months. "A good layer of mulch can improve soil structure and fertility," explains Elise. "It’s a simple step that can make a big difference in the health and productivity of your garden.

" Choose the right mulch: Organic options like compost, bark chips, or straw are ideal. Clear the area: Remove weeds and debris before applying mulch. Apply the mulch evenly: Spread a 2-3 inch layer around plants, keeping it away from the stems to prevent rot.

Replenish as needed: Top up the mulch throughout the season to maintain its effectiveness. By mulching in March, you give your garden a head start before weeds have a chance to grow. This also allows the mulch to slowly decompose and improve soil fertility in time for peak growing season.

"Mulching is an investment in your garden’s future," says Elise. "It saves time and effort later in the season while boosting plant health and vitality." Elise also recommends several other jobs in March including pruning your roses and shrubs to encourage healthy growth.

She adds that March is the perfect time to plant summer-flowering bulbs such as lilies and dahlias. She explains: “If you want your garden to be blooming come summer, then make sure you’re starting to prune your rose bushes now. And if you’re looking for more flowers, then now is the perfect time to plant lilies and dahlia bulbs.

“And it goes without saying that you should be aerating and feeding your lawn to promote lush growth.”.
