The End Of ‘The Penguin’ Has Kind Of Been Spoiled By Matt Reeves Already

The Batman’s Matt Reeves seems to be open to talking about the ending of The Penguin pretty plainly.

The Penguin continues to impress everyone every weekend here during its fantastic miniseries run, and an open question has always been whether Oz is going to make it to the top of the city’s underworld, or even more pressingly, survive the events of this series. I didn’t actually realize this but..

.The Batman’s Matt Reeves seems to be open to talking about the ending pretty plainly. I think most viewers of The Penguin may not realize there has always been a fixed “plan” for Oz, one that answers all these questions already and makes the end of the series a bit of an anti-climax in at least some ways.

Maybe some viewers knew or assumed some of this, but I didn’t, and I imagine I’m not alone. I guess I’ll put a spoiler warning here, even though this is from Matt Reeves directly, speaking to The Wrap. So yes, Oz will be in The Batman 2, meaning he survives this series for sure.

It is unlikely he’ll be the main villain for that film, but he may play a similar supporting role like he did in the first one. I understand that yes, in the comic books only rarely do big Batman villains actually die, and it would have been somewhat odd to kill off Penguin and have him fail to reach the top. But this is.

..also a new, pretty unorthodox “grounded” Batman universe.

It’s a trilogy and some spin-off shows and does not need to be some sprawling, comic-loyal thing. It can do its own things which, given the events of The Penguin, did not seem like a guarantee of Oz’s survival, as the show is essentially a straight mob drama where anyone can die at any time. I guess the main question turns to whether Sofia Falcone survives, as we don’t know anything about her fate.

If we know Oz wins, we know she loses, and that may almost guarantee that she does. Again, maybe it was “obvious” the plan that Oz would win and live and show up in The Batman 2, but that’s not something I thought was guaranteed until I read Reeves’ comments here. Sort of strange, if you ask me.
