The digital DNI is beginning to take shape. This Tuesday's Council of Ministers approved the decree giving the green light to the "process of issuing, managing, and developing the digital DNI," which means it can now be carried on mobile phones. The measure, promoted by the Ministry of the Interior and the National Police, represents a technological and administrative advancement that the ministry headed by Fernando Grande-Marlaska began studying last term and is now seeing the light of day.
Three years ago, the minister announced that they were finalizing the implementation of this digital DNI and spoke of a "genuine revolution" for the public administration and the private sector, particularly in terms of streamlining procedures. The decree regulating the digital format of the DNI will be published tomorrow, Wednesday, as Grande-Marlaska announced at a press conference on Tuesday. Once published, those who wish to have it will be able to access it on their mobile phones through an application run by the Ministry of the Interior.
This digital ID will serve as a virtual substitute for the physical ID, allowing citizens to identify themselves and prove their identity. However, for the time being, it will be used for limited purposes. In fact, it should be noted that the digital ID will only be valid within the Spanish state; that is, it cannot be used for travel, and for some specific procedures, the physical ID will be required.
As the minister explained, for the time being, the use of the digital ID is in a "first phase" and, for example, will not be used to prove identity or carry out online transactions. However, it can be used for everyday in-person transactions such as accessing shows, collecting packages, signing a mortgage loan with the bank, among others..
